Hello,
We have an appointment at the US Consulate in Canada on the 5th December 2007. We were planning on driving down to Ottawa from NY as the airfares are too high and also its a driveable distance.
I needed advice from members on how to go about this - namely,
1) Would car rental companies here like Avis/Enterprise etc offer rentals+insurance to Canada and back. I will be calling them up soon.
2) Related to Q1 - Is US drivers licence valid in Canada.
3) Do we need to carry any additional docs other than the usual passport/canadian visa/H1 docs/paystubs etc.
4) Any other helpful tips from members for this case.

Hi,
Car rentals would give insurance, if you are not taking additional insurance and use your car insurance that will also work; you need to let your insurance company know that. If you are interested in driving, you might also consider taking a train from NY. I went Ottawa last October for Visa extension, I planned to drive from Boston, I had to stay at work late the previous night, after a driving a while, I felt I needed some rest and took a bus from there and picked my car on the way back. There are few B&Bs right near the consulate, I booked one over phone. They came and picked me up at the bus stop and dropped me back at the bus stop. The consulate is walking distance from the city center and I did not need a car, once I am in town. The passport is given only on the next day. Keep in mind it is going to be very very cold at that time of the year at Ottawa. Be prepared for it.
US driver license is valid in Canada.
All the usual documents are good enough, while crossing the border; most times they do not stamp the passport unless you ask for it. It is a good idea to get the passport stamped as it maintains your exit and entry record. Mostly they will not collect your I-94 and that is OK.
If you are going in December, they have a lot activity ice skating activity and you will enjoy it, so plan well keep warm and enjoy your stay. If you need any additional info. please send me a personal message.

Sorry, if this question has already been discussed before. I tried hard looking here and else where but could not find a good answer.
My wife recently received H1B visa approval. The H1 visa will be effective from October 1, 2007. So she is currently on H4 visa and don not have social security number. My question is, can she go ahead apply for the SSN now or she needs to wait until October 1.
I already tried calling Social Security office, but the customer rep keeps saying that bring you green card. :( . I gave up trying to explain her my situation after a while. Any help would be appreciated.

When you say your LUD changed do you mean only the date or the message as well? I have had my date changed, but that dont mean nothing.

I did not see any status change when i received FP notices. Status is "Case Received and Pending". No LUD also. Once the FP is done LUD on my 485 was updated twice

I called USCIS NSC this morning, and got a lady. She asked me if my case is an employment based one. I answered "yes". She asked me if my priority date is current. I answered "yes". Afterwards she told me that they have very high work volume because lots of people are current. She told me to have patience and check the status online, because she can not provide anymore information other than that's available online.
I told her that this is the first time I am calling USCIS in last eight years, how much more patience I am suppose to exhibit. She told me that she understands (I am sure she just does not!!) but calling USCIS will not help. Since the conversation was not leading to any information. I decided to end the conversation by thanking her (although she does not deserve one).
Shall I call again and expect a nicer IO?

Hi guys,
Right now I've my flight booked for 18th. But I was wondering if I change my flight to 16th (sunday) and come there, will I be of any assistance to the planning, etc.? I am not a state chapter leader.
Again this can happen only after I get my leave approved, and I get a reasonable flight price. Also if I can come, is there any way for me to share hotel accomodation with others?
Please let me know ASAP. Thanks.

On the contrary, if you think about it, by approving 2005 cases, is it fair to assume that USCIS has cleared most of the 2001-2004 PD cases which were backlogged...In that case, when the new quota begins in Oct 2007, there is a good chance of dates moving ahead of the June 2007 bulletin...
Ofcourse, it all depends on the number of cases the BECs clear between now and Oct...If they meet their Sept 30, 2007 LC backlog reduction deadline, then I believe we are up for a long wait as there are a lot of 245(i) cases that were filed in Apr 2001 that will be ready for 140/485 filing and the dates might retrogress quite a bit for EB-3 category.....

since I am no longer on H-1B (I left my sponsoring employer last year) and I have been working with a different employer on EAD, what document should I send to show my present status?? by the way, I have a pending I-485

My wife and I (dependent application with wife's application as primary) received the receipt notices on 14th Sept. Our filing dates for AP,EAD,485 are under

My wife got her FP notice and is scheduled for biometrics/FP for 17th Oct. However, I havent received my FP notice. I wanted to check if this is normal? Shouldnt both of us be receiving the notices together? Sorry for the silly question.

Thank you so much Bumblebee, my lawyer's warning of not being able to use old PD for a new job description with the same employer wasn't justified, I knew that it didn't make sense and the advice from the conference lawyer was correct, that: continue with this EB3 LC once approved apply for I-140 and once this I-140 is approved, file a new labor under EB2 worldwide PERM and then when the time for this new labor (with new work responsilbilites and same employer) is approved then I recapture the original priority date at the time of filing I-140 concurrently with I-485, thanks.

Due to a sudden demise of my wife's grandmother, my wife had to go to India last week. She is planning to come back by Nov. 15. I received the receipt notices for my wife's I-485, I-131 and I-765. My question is if the fingerprinting notice comes before she arrives and also if it is scheduled prior to her arrival date on Nov. 15; what are the options of rescheduling and can we get the date of our choice after Nov. 15. Also, I would be extremely grateful, if someone could upload a sample fingerprinting notice from USCIS. I couldn't find any where on the site.
